Drama Curriculum - "Drama is Life With the Dull Bits Cut Out"

Drama 1

Drama 1 sets the foundation for the rest of the drama program. The units covered include: play analysis, storytelling, puppetry, improvisation, oral interpretation, pantomime and characterization. It is a fast-paced fun-filled semester.

Drama 2

Drama 2 continues where Drama 1 ends. Participants work on solo auditions (students are required to audition for the advanced acting program), comedic and serious monologues and scenes, in addition to Readers Theatre. Students also take a look at the fascinating history of theatre in a fun performance based format.

Beginning Stagecraft

In beginning stage craft students will study the following technical theatre units: set design, make-up, costuming, sound design, lighting, and publicity. They will have the opportunity to design and produce models or renderings for each unit based on a play discussed in class and then again for a play of their own choosing. Students are also given the opportunity to work on the current school play in production.

Advanced Stagecraft

Advanced stagecraft put to use all the theory and skills learned in the beginning stagecraft class as participants help put up and run the technical aspect of Eagle High’s main stage productions. Students in this class are also given the opportunity to compete in the technical category at the district and state drama tournaments.Drama 2 continues where Drama 1 ends. Productions

Each semester students are given the opportunity to audition for Eagle High’s main stage productions. Participation in these shows is a privilege and requires a firm commitment of after school hours throughout the rehearsal and performance process. Participation also provides an excellent venue for students to utilize the many skills they learn in their drama classes while enjoying the rewards of a polished public performance

Drama Club

The drama club serves as the community outreach arm of the Eagle High School drama program. Drama students interested in participating meet once a week during lunch to plan and implement a variety of activities including fundraising and publicity efforts as well as producing programs to tour throughout the community.

Drama 3-8

Drama 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 respectively constitute the advanced drama program. The work done at this level is varied and challenging. The fall semester is largely dedicated to preparing for the district and state drama tournaments. Other units may include Shakespeare, playwriting, play production, advanced characterization, improvisation and theatre history

Directing

This is a new course to be offered at Eagle High which will be taught only when the necessary enrollment has been reached. It is intended for the advanced drama student who has successfully passed drama 3-4 with a B or better grade. This course will begin with an exploration of various directing styles. Students will then learn the role of the director and be given the opportunity to practice their skills in a directing practicum where they will cast and direct a piece for public performance.

The Director

Tracy Harrison is the current director of Eagle High School’s drama program. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Education and a Master’s degree in Theatre for Young Audiences. Tracy worked for three years at the university level before coming to Eagle High in 2002. “I love my work and believe that the most useful type of successful teacher is one whose main interest is the student, not the subject.”
